Draft Pick: Patrick Estes

#248 - Patrick Estes
Tight End/Offensive Tackle - Virginia
Height: 6-6 Weight: 268

Overview

Estes is an unheralded athlete who played in the shadows of All-America tight end Heath Miller, but the two combined to give Virginia the best tight-end tandem in the country. Estes is a fine blocker who could have started for most major colleges. He could develop into a quality pro prospect, as he is blessed with impressive quickness for a player of his size.

Estes was a standout tight end, linebacker, wide receiver, punter and placekicker as a senior at Benedictine High School. He earned Reebok/ESPN All-America honors and was a two-time all-metro first-team selection on offense, adding first-team all-state honors on offense and defense as a junior and senior. He was rated the fourth-best player in Virginia and the nation's third-best tight end as a senior by SuperPrep.

Estes helped lead Benedictine High School to a 9-3 record and the state Division III independent championship as a senior, as he caught 52 passes for 1,251 yards and scored 11 touchdowns that season. Defensively, he registered 87 tackles and 14 sacks in 2000. He averaged 39.8 yards per punt, kicked a 46-yard field goal and excelled on special teams, blocking four punts and returning two for touchdowns. He added 33 receptions for 629 yards and five touchdowns as a junior while totaling 75 tackles (12 sacks) on defense, blocked two punts and returned one for a touchdown his junior year. He was also a member of the basketball and track teams, playing center on the basketball team that won the state Catholic title his sophomore and junior seasons. He was a member of the 4x100 relay team that won the Division III state championship.

Estes played in 11 games behind Chris Luzar as a freshman, catching three passes for 33 yards. He played in every game for Virginia in 2002, starting four contests as he hauled in a career-high 13 passes for 97 yards (7.5 avg) and four touchdowns. A right-knee sprain would sideline him for the Troy State and North Carolina State games in 2003, as he managed only 48 yards and a score on six grabs.

He was used primarily as a blocker in his final season with the Cavaliers, making six catches for 74 yards. In 47 games with the team, Estes started 12 times. He caught 28 passes for 252 yards (9.0 avg) and five touchdowns, adding two solo tackles and 4 yards on two kickoff returns.

Analysis

Positives: Has an adequately developed frame with a good bubble, thick legs, good arm length and large hands Physical run blocker who is quick to come out of his stance, extending his hands into the opponent's chest on his rise Gets good movement upon initial contact thanks to his leg drive and powerful arm swipes Plays with an aggressive nature Shows toughness going over the middle for the ball Makes the cut-off blocks on linebackers up field, but is best blocking at the line Mauler-type of a blocker who has the power to handle the larger defenders and the vision to pick up another defender after making the initial hit Lock-on-and-steer-type of blocker who plays with good base Has the frame that can carry additional bulk for a potential move to either guard or tackle.

Negatives: Has adequate quickness to fire out on his blocks, but frequently struggles with the defender to separate and shake coverage Breaks high coming out of his patterns and has a marginal burst after the catch Fights to get open, as needs to use his hands better when coming off the snap to prevent from being rerouted Lacks the fluid hip turn to get to the off-target passes and is generally tackled at the catch spot Has problems over-extending to make blocks in the open, appearing more comfortable blocking near the line of scrimmage Despite his good timed speed, he is very slow to get out of his breaks and will generally run soft angle cuts in his routes Can find the soft spot in the zone, but he tends to body catch and double catch the ball
