Observations from Camp I
A guest contributor has allowed us to post his observations from the second day of training camp. Thanks Vin.
-After 2 days of practice it's becoming really evident that P.J. Fleck and Johnnie Morton are the standout WRs. Fleck is quite simply catching everything that comes his way. Today, Alex Smith botched a deep throw but Fleck dove and came down with it. Easily the highlight of th eday. I also like what I'm seeing from Marcus Maxwell. He's big and pretty fast and looks to be a special team contributor. Rashaun Woods looks sluggish out there but caught some passes and looked better than yesterday or anytime I saw him last year. What I dislike is that the guy doesn't hustle. He had a step on a CB today on a deep fly route, but just didn't run that thing down.
-Arnaz Battle has all the moves.....once and if he catches the ball. Today, he dropped a perfect deep pass from Tim Rattay where he had his man beat easily. He also dropped a pass up the middle after being hit by Mike Rumph. So, he needs to pick it up if he's our #1 guy. Full Story...
- They had the QBs do deep out passes today, and surprisingly the best looking QB during these drills wasn't Smith, Rattay, or Dorsey. It was none other than Cody Pickett. Pickett maybe behind on the playbook and system, but the kid has the physical tools. His deep outs were like lazers. Rattay underthrew some of his outs, while Smith needs to work on his accuracy as he constantly hit some of those passes on the wrong shoulder.
- Ken Dorsey may have improved his arm strenght but he's still a bit flaky IMO. He did throw some nice deep passes (probably the best deep passes of the day besides the ones Rattay threw that were dropped), but Dorsey simply needs to add more velocity on those throws.
- The first pass Alex Smith threw was a complete misfire. He was trying to hit a TE on an in route, and the ball went sailing over the TEs head and onto the sidelines. Fortunately, Smith rebounded with some good, quick throws. He's excelling in the short/intermediate throws and the ones tha that are situated in the middle of the field. However, he's still overthrowing those deep passes or making his receivers wait too long for them. Best throw Alex Smith made today was on team drills where he fired a lazer to Eric Johnson in the middle of 3 defenders.
- Our offense is way behind our defense. We simply don't look like we have much to work with offensively at the WR spot. On top of that, I'm noticing a ton of dinks and dunks and short passes to the FBs. Often times in team drills, QBs would look, look, and look and have to wind up dumping off to a back because the WRs simply couldn't beat their men. David Boston sure as hell looks good right about now.
- Brandon Lloyd has improved his route running. He looked pretty crisp, but he still dropped two passes today that should have been caught. Why does this guy continue to make the circus catch instead of grabbing the ball with two hands and hanging on?
- Frank Gore....remember that name. You're going to see it a lot when he's whizzing by the TV screen. I love the explosion on this guy.
- Kevan Barlow and Fred Beasley make the biggest tandem of RB/FB I've seen in quite some time. Barlow is chizzled out and Beasley looks stocky and massive and can lock heads with the best of them.
- If we can build a decent offensive line this season, our RB depth looks good with Barlow, Gore, Jackson, and Hicks. Jackson is a good back and looked shifty today. Not as shifty as Gore though.
- Julian Peterson constantly crashed in on the offense during team drills. He maybe only 90% but his impact is felt. He's very quick off the edge and will play nicely in that elephant position.
- I got to see a lot more from Sopoaga today. He came in and crashed down some runs. Nice to see his presence felt as well.
- Thank God we signed Marques Douglas. This guy is massive and coupled with BY makes a formidable DE tandem. Bryant Young looks like he's in mid season form btw. Wow.
- I guess it's because Nolan and Singletary are defensive coaches, but you can really see the intensity on the D. That front 7 looks good. Derek Smith was out and flying around quite a bit today as well. He got into the face of Dorsey.
- Towards the end of practice a minor squirmish broke out when one of our DEs came in and slapped Dorsey's hand. It led to a lot of shouting, but the team quickly huddled up and sorted matters on.
- Joe Nedney has arrived people. This guy was booming kickoffs well into the end zone almost everytime he kicked. The other backup kickers weren't even close. Nedney has a very strong leg and he will be our kicker. Andy Lee had some nice, high punts today as well.
- Rasheed Marshall looks a bit slow. At least he didn't muff as many kick off returns as he did punt returns yesterday though.
- A lot of offensive sets I saw today had the FB/RB splitting wide as a RB. There was also a nice set where we incorporated 3 RBs in the backfield (Barlow, Beasley, and another FB) in a kind of wishbone/Green Bay Packers style of play.
- Anthony Adams is playing special teams and NT.
- I don't know if it's because we have very little at WR, but our DBs have held on. Rumph looks like he's easing into the FS position, while Plummer looked fluid out there.
