49ers Notes:
49ers coy on quarterback
Sacramento Bee: The hunch is Alex Smith will start at quarterback when the 49ers open their exhibition schedule Saturday night against the visiting Raiders.
Woods returns to practice
49ers.com: Since suffering a groin injury last Sunday, WR Rashaun Woods returned to practice on Monday.
Receiver putting pressure on himself to get on track
Mercury News: Healthy again after missing a week because of a groin strain, wide receiver Rashaun Woods rejoined the 49ers' workouts Monday in a development that he hopes finally puts his career on track.
Rocky rookie season may loom for 49ers' QB
Philadelphia Inquirer: This is hard work, being a franchise's savior. And not just any franchise. Smith is the heir apparent for the San Francisco 49ers, the team of Tittle and Brodie and Montana and Young, and five Super Bowl titles. And Smith is getting paid a princely sum - $49 million over six years - to take his place alongside those legendary passers.
49ers' coach was a longshot himself
San Francisco Chronicle: Mike Nolan, because of his college experience, might be uniquely qualified to see something in a player others miss. Not only that, he can relate to the training-camp longshot.
