Review: Where Have You Gone?
I was recently approached by a sports publishing company asking me if I would write a review on a new Niner book they published. They said they would send me a copy of the book and all I had to do was write a review on it. I was not sure what to expect on this book, because they really didn't tell me what the book was about, but after receiving the book in the mail, I was pleasantly surprised. The book is titled San Francisco 49ers: Where Have you Gone? It was written by Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, and as soon as I saw who it was written by I was interested in reading more.
Before I started reading I casually flipped through the book, and the first thing that popped out at me were names of Niner players long forgotten, some I never even heard of. Players such as Visco Grgich, John Woudenberg, Paul Salata, and Bernie Casey. I knew Bernie Casey played football but never realized it was the Niners who drafted him. There was even mention of Jim Druckenmiller, yes the one player I hope stays long forgotten.

The book is a must read for any Niner fan, casual or diehard. The stories not only tell the tales of current Niner greats, but also brings to us the memories of players
that were greats long before the Montana, Young, and Walsh eras. Again players such as Jeff Fuller, Eason Ramson, Charlie Krueger, & Leo 'The Lion' Nomellini. The book is full of them. What I enjoyed the most was that not only does Maiocco retell stories of the players playing days, but also gives us an update of what they are accomplishing today. Kind of like a 'where are they now', but strictly 49ers.
This book is loaded with information on former Niners, Y.A. Tittle, John Brodie, Dwight Clark, and Riki Ellison, just to name a few. One little fact I read in this book that I thought was interesting, and I doubt many Niner fans know about. Is that former receiver Paul Salata was the man who coined the term 'Mr. Irrelevant' He was the one who started what we all know today as Irrelevant Week, the week where the last player in the NFL Draft is honored in a week long celebration. This is just one example of things you may not have known, there are plenty more to read.
So all of you Niner fans out there, if you are interested in reading up on Niner greats and not so greats then I highly recommend this book. Also if you haven't picked it up yet, you need to also purchase Matt Maiocco's other book, Tales from the San Francisco 49ers Sidelines.
