Smith to Start

It's official. On Wednesday afternoon coach Mike Nolan announced that rookie QB Alex Smith will be the starter this Saturday (08.13.05) against the Raiders in the preseason opener. Smith took the news with the same poise he's shown against every challenge in the last year.

He'll find out soon enough whether he can keep that cool when the Raiders come to town.
"This is a big opportunity, but it's still just a preseason game, and I have to treat it that way," Smith said. "The atmosphere will be nice. It will be realistic. It's one more thing for me to learn."
