TC: Starting Job - Smith's to Lose
Quarterback Alex Smith is one step closer to landing the starting gig at QB. If Smith shows he can handle the job, coach Mike Nolan will keep Smith as the starter.
"Right now, I'm content with the way it is," Nolan said Tuesday after Smith worked with the first unit for a fourth straight day to open training camp. "It doesn't please some of the guys, in Tim Rattay and Ken Dorsey, but I'm not here to please. I'm just here to find the best guy." "I have an opportunity to structure it in a way where we can find out about the guy (taken) with the first pick. I don't want to wait and see. ... I want to see if he could do it."
Trade Talk?
-- With the progression of Smith, there are whispers that QB Tim Rattay may be on the trading block after NFL teams begin finalizing their rosters. Word is maybe a veteran QB to help Smith & probable backup Ken Dorsey. Source: SF Illustrated

-- Word is after each practice the injury concerns with Frank Gore are starting to disappear.
-- Teammates are saying the Peterson is back in top form. "If he's not explosive, then there are a lot of people in the league who want to be 'not explosive,'" said Jamie Winborn
Injury update:
-- Cornerback Shawntae Spencer returned to practice in the morning, but did not make it through the entire day.
-- Rashaun Woods is day-to-day (groin)
