Despite Loss, Smith Bodes Well

As Alex Smith left the field for the last time Sunday, having placed his final pass in the hands of Arizona cornerback Eric Green, he looked younger than he had all day. His head drooped a little, and safety Shawntae Spencer gave him a pat as they passed each other during Smith's unhappy trip to the sideline. When he took a seat on the bench, Smith's chin dipped toward his chest, and this time, running back Terry Jackson gave the rookie quarterback an encouraging consoling swat.
