The talk in camp may be all about the quarterbacks, but coach Mike Nolan believes the running game to be the foundation of the offense. Nolan dodged a question when asked if rookie Frank Gore would spell Barlow during the season or compete for the starting job. He answered 'Right now, his challenge is just to get healthy,' he said. 'I like our running backs -- Kevan Barlow, (rookie) Frank Gore, Maurice Hicks,' Nolan said. '(Rookie free agent) Bobby Purify got a lot of work today, and I liked what I saw of him.

Press Democrat: Cornerback Willie Middlebrooks figured he probably would not be back with the Denver Broncos, but he had no idea where he might land. The Broncos placed a call to the 49ers last month to see if they were interested. And that's how he ended up in the Bay Area.

Contra Costa Times: Alex Smith was throwing the ball effortlessly during the offense-only portion of Wednesday practice. Pass after pass hit his receivers right in the hands. These were throws reminiscent of the great Joe Montana, whose passes were so soft and precise that they virtually caught themselves.
