Positive Spin

49ers try to put a positive spin on Sunday's loss

The 49ers head into their bye week with four straight losses, but both the head coach and the starting quarterback insisted Monday they're on the verge of becoming a good team.
'We are still close,' said Alex Smith a day after his humbling NFL debut. 'I know the scores sometimes don't show that, but I think we're close to becoming a competitive team in the league.'

Coach Mike Nolan stuck to a similar theme, kicking off his Monday news conference by picking out the positives from the team's 28-3 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
