More on the Bachelor
Eric Heitmann's wife, Emily, was sitting at the computer Tuesday when she stumbled upon the identity of the San Francisco 49ers' new backup quarterback.
Ordinarily, this wouldn't have been exciting news, but the 49ers had not signed just anyone. Rather, they had signed Jesse Palmer, the heartthrob former New York Giant known more for his stint on "The Bachelor" two years ago than for his feats on the gridiron.
'She called her mom right when she saw it on the Internet,' Heitmann, the 49ers' right guard, said Wednesday afternoon, a bemused look on his face.
The 49ers signed Palmer, 27, for the rest of the season because Alex Smith is sidelined indefinitely with a knee injury and Ken Dorsey's ankle sprain leaves his availability in doubt for Sunday afternoon's home game against the Giants.
Second-year player Cody Pickett will make his first NFL start Sunday, and Dorsey at best will be the backup, though he did participate in Wednesday's practice.
