Battle High on Nolan's Wishlist
As he continues to assess the roster with an eye to the 2006 season and beyond, coach Mike Nolan said Arnaz Battle is a player he's counting on, even though the third-year wide receiver has not proven to be durable.
Nolan said Battle has a stress fracture in his knee and his status for Sunday's game in Jacksonville was uncertain as of Monday. The coach also said team management is in negotiation on a contract extension for Battle.
'We've been talking to Arnaz's people,' Nolan said. 'Things look favorable for that situation.'
Nolan also said 'there's a possibility' of signing players, such as Battle, before the end of the season. Linebacker Derek Smith is included in that group.
'He will be part of this as we go forward,'' Nolan said. 'We don't want to jeopardize his career with us.'

49ers shouldn't rush into Bush
Contra Costa Times: There are a lot of truly dreadful teams in the NFL this year, the 49ers and Raiders being among the most wretched of all, which is one reason why there has been so much focus on the 2006 draft in recent weeks.
