Marathe/Tumey on the Outs?
Profootballtalk.com -- There's talk around the league that 49ers coach Mike Nolan's ongoing effort to add a new front-office executive to the organization is the first step in a plan to dump Director of Football Administration Terry Tumey. We'd previously heard that Director of Football Operations Paraag Marathe also had a bull's-eye on his back side. We now hear that only Tumey is likely to get the boot.
Some league insiders believe that Falcons exec Ray Anderson, a former agent, ultimately will be the guy to join the 49ers.
If/when Nolan pulls off this possible one-two punch, it will be the second victory in the past few months of "football guys" over entrenched business types. In December, Browns G.M. Phil Savage won a face-off with former team president John Collins.
And, in our view, Nolan's efforts will serve only to make teams even more leery about bringing in strong, dynamic personalities to serve in key positions. If, after all, Tumey had recommended a coaching hire in 2005 who would be unlikely to rock the boat, Tumey currently would have no worries.
But Nolan wants to win. Period. Even if it means running out one of the very guys who helped get him his first head coaching gig.
