Singletary to Interview for Lions Job

The Detroit Lions received permission Tuesday from the 49ers to interview assistant head coach and linebacker coach Mike Singletary for their vacant head-coaching position, a 49ers spokesman confirmed.

The contact is not a surprise. Singletary's name surfaced as a potential candidate in the days after the Lions' November firing of Steve Mariucci. During his post-season news conference Monday, 49ers coach Mike Nolan reinforced that notion when he said he expected to hear from one or more teams interested in talking to Singletary about their coaching openings.

There was no immediate word when or where Singletary would meet with Lions president Matt Millen. Neither Singletary nor the Lions public relations department returned phone calls seeking comment. Mariucci, a former 49ers coach, was dismissed after going 15-28 over two-plus seasons in Detroit. Lions defensive coordinator Dick Jauron served as interim head coach for the final five games of the season.
