Newberry Back in the Mix

On Monday, for the first time since last September, Jeremy Newberry crashed into 300-pound defensive linemen. The 49ers center jogged to the huddle between plays and showed no signs of favoring a knee worthy of an ``E.R.'' plot line.

Newberry's performance review was incomplete: Coach Mike Nolan wanted to watch the videotape of practice, and Newberry wanted to wait to see how he felt this morning.

But Newberry was still upright at the end of a two-hour practice, and that alone represented a major accomplishment for a player coming off arthroscopic surgery in June.

Oakland Tribune: How his knee will feel a day or two after the fact remains to be seen, but in the immediate aftermath of his first preseason practice Monday, 49ers center Jeremy Newberry sounded a note of optimism.

Newberry gladly takes lumps
Sacramento Bee: Center Jeremy Newberry absorbed his first practice pounding in nearly a year Monday. And true to his blue-collar nature, the eight-year veteran said he relished the abuse.

Newberry back in action
San Francisco Chronicle: During a running play in Monday's practice, center Jeremy Newberry planted nose tackle Anthony Adams, while a running back vaulted past them. It must have been a warm feeling for Newberry in his first padded practice in nearly a year.

Offensive line still in flux
Press Democrat: Sixty percent of the 49ers' starting offensive line positions are in some form of limbo as the club nears its final game of the exhibition season.
