Mike Nolan looked at the clock and quickly surmised the 49ers' offense could get off another play before the end of the half.

Hurriedly, he signaled for a timeout with 22 seconds left in the second quarter of last week's exhibition game against the Tennessee Titans with the 49ers in possession at the 21-yard line.
'I told the guys to call a timeout and the quarterback is going, 'Why?' ' Nolan said.

'It was fourth down and I thought it was third down. I was embarrassed. I was thinking about the play and I lost track of the downs. I made a mistake.'
